Rafael González obtained his Law degree from the Technological University of Mexico, in
Mexico City, and completed his professional internship with Rojas & Sanchez de Tagle in the City
Center.  A brief incursion into the public sector made him aware of nature’s fragility and the
vulnerability of its ecosystems, as he witnessed how the few remaining urban green zones were
devastated and transformed into minicities.  The apparent lack of enforcement of environmental
laws strengthened his interest in nature.  His love of a good cause led him to support Greenpeace’
s entry into Mexico and to work with other individuals and groups in this field.  He continues this
work as legal counsel for Mexiconservacion, which he co-founded in 2006.
Lucy Gallagher grew up in Southeast Asia where she was first exposed to the plight of
coral reef ecosystems.  She has worked in the Mesoamerican region since 1997 on coral
reef conservation projects in Belize, Mexico and Honduras. She has an MSc in
Environmental Assessment and Evaluation from the London School of Economics (UK)
and an MSc in Tropical Coastal Management from the University of Newcastle (UK).
Lucy has dedicated almost 10 years to the scientific monitoring of the Mesoamerican Reef having initiated several
marine conservation projects throughout the region for various large not-for-profit organizations. She has worked as
an independent consultant and representative on numerous marine environmental education and capacity-building
initiatives in the region, for organizations such as the Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the Reef Environmental
Education Foundation (REEF). She has also provided technical support to large regional and international projects
such as the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System Project (MBRS) and the Coral Reef Targeted Research Project (CRTR).

Lucy's sometimes infectious determination to protect our natural resources is driven by one of her mother's quirky
catch phrases: "there is simply no such thing as I can't".  In 2006 she joined forces with two of her equally determined
friends, David and Rafael, to create Mexiconservacion in order to provide support to all communities and
organizations wishing to preserve the environment they live in.
We are passionate about our work and about the infinite
possibilities which the natural world offers us. The beauty,
richness and diversity of the flora, fauna and ecosystems that we
are surrounded by inspire us to do all we can to guarantee that
future generations will continue to enjoy these wonders.
David Nuñez was born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico.  He is a biologist by training,
and holds master’s degrees in Molecular Genetics & Cell Biology from the University of
Chicago, and Infectious Disease Epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health.  It
was while at Harvard that he took an interest in environmental issues.
Sponsored by the Harvard Center for Health and the Global Environment, and by the Wildlife Preservation Trust
International (now Wildlife Trust), he completed an internship at the New England Aquarium in 2000.  He then
joined the Pesticide Exposure Surveillance Team at the Texas Department of Health.

The intimate connections between the health of the environment and public health so fascinated him, that
eventually he decided to work towards environmental conservation. Upon returning to Mexico, he worked with
Centro Ecológico Akumal, first as Laboratory Manager and then as Institutional Development Coordinator.

In 2006, with friends and former co-workers, he founded Mexiconservación.

In addition to his work, he enjoys nature and wildlife photography, and travels whenever he can.  Having enjoyed
eye-opening adventures in extended treks through the US, Ireland, Trinidad & Tobago and China, he is now
focusing on re-discovering the natural wonders of his native Mexico.
