Bienteveo Grande - Great Kiskadee

Hay varios mosqueros de coloración similar. En
el Caribe Mexicano es fácil confundir al
Bienteveo con el Luis Piquigrueso (Megarynchus
pitangua) o el Luis Gregario (Myiozetetes
similis). Los Mayas sabiamente le dan el mismo
nombre a todos: Xkatay. Todos se alimentan
principalmente de insectos voladores. Es común
verles posados en una rama realizando cortos
vuelos circulares y regresando a posarse. Así es
como cazan. Esperan a que pase volando algún
insecto, y salen por el, y regresan a esperar el
próximo.

There are several flycatchers with similar
coloration. Along the Mexican Caribbean it is
easy to confuse the Great Kiskadee with the
Boatbilled Flycatcher (Megarynchus pitangua) or
the Social Flycatcher (Myiozetetes similis). The
Mayans wisely call them all by the same name:
Xkatay. They all feed primarily on flying insects.
It is common to see them perched on a branch,
making small circular flights, and returning to the
same perch. That is how the hunt. They wait
for a flying insect to pass by, fly out to get it,
then return to wait for the next.
