| Las fotos no son muy buenas, pero me dió mucho gusto tomarlas. No es cada día que a uno lo despierta una especie que no había visto antes. Los chillidos de esta ave por la madrugada me obligaron a salir de la cama a buscar el origen de tal escándalo. Y resultó ser un ave que jamás había visto yo antes. No pude acercarme más, pues el fango de la laguna casi me traga entero: ya estaba yo hundido hasta la cintura y decidí desistir, no tanto por mi seguridad, sino por la de la cámara... En fin, regresando me puse a investigar y resulta ser un Carao, y la razón por la cual jamás lo había visto antes es que se alimenta principalmente de caracoles manzanos, es decir, su hábitat es mas bien de agua dulce- mientras que yo soy más bien costeño. Esta ave acuática se encuentra desde Florida al norte, hasta Argentina al sur. Se alimenta principalmente de caracoles, aunque también de peces, lagartijas, ranas, e insectos. Curiosamente no rompe la concha del caracol, sino que quita la “tapa” de la concha y remueve el animal sin dañar la concha. Otro dato curioso, según Wikipedia, es que esta ave dio su voz al Hipogrifo de las películas de Harry Potter. |

| These aren`t great pictures, but I was thrilled to take them. It isn´t every day that one is awakened by a species one hasn´t seen before. Its early morning squawking forced me to crawl out of bed to look for the source of such ruckus. And it turned out to be a bird I´d never seen before. I wasn´t able to get any closer, as the muck from the lagoon almost swallowed me whole: I was up to my waist in it and decided to turn back, not so much for my safety, but for the camera´s... Anyway, when I got back I started researching and found out it was a Limpkin , and the reason I´d never seen it is that it feeds primarily on apple snails, that is to say, its habitat is mostly freshwater- whereas I live on the coast.. This aquatic bird is found from Florida in the north down to Argentina in the south. It feeds primarily on snails, but also on fish, lizards, frogs and insects. Strangely enough it does not break the snail shell, but rather removes the “lid” and removes the animal without harming the shell. Another curious fact, according to Wikipedia, is that this bird gave its voice to the Hippogriff in the Harry Potter movies. |
