| Esta es una de las familias de aves más antiguas, que data de los tiempos de los dinosaurios. Existen más de 40 especies en esta familia cuyo nombre científico inexplicablemente significa “cuervo calvo” en Griego. El nombre común, Cormoran, es un poco más acertado ya que proviene del Latín “corvus marinus”, es decir “cuervo marino”. Aunque no son cuervos, es fácil ver como obtuvieron ese nombre por su color oscuro. En vuelo, quizá sean las aves acuáticas menos gráciles, y se les distingue fácilmente por un vuelo de aleteo frenético justo sobre la superficie, mientras otras aves planean sin esfuerzo a grandes alturas. Sin embargo, son excelentes nadadores que utilizan sus patas para moverse bajo el agua. Algunas especies pueden llegar a profundidades de hasta 45 metros. Son aves sociales que anidan en colonias, y frecuentemente se les ve asoleándose con las alas abiertas, para secar sus plumas, ya que (al igual que en las Anhingas) éstas carecen de los aceites impearmeabilizantes que tienen otras aves acuáticas. |

| This is one of the more ancient bird Families, dating back to the time of the dinosaurs. There are over 40 species in this family, whose name inexplicably translates from the Greek as “bald raven”. The common name Cormorant makes more sense, as it is derived from the Latin “corvus marinus”, meaning “sea raven”. Though they are not actually related to ravens, it is easy to see how they got the name from their usually dark coloring. In flight they are probably the least graceful of sea birds, and are often seem flapping frantically just above the sea surface rather than soaring high above it. They are however, excellent swimmers, and propel themselves with their feet underwater. Some species have been found at depths up to 45 meters! These are social birds that nest in colonies, and are often seen sunning themselves with wings outstretched to dry their feathers which (like those of the Anhinga) lack the waterproofing oils that other seabirds have. |
