Fragata Magnifica - Magnificent Frigatebird

Las Fragatas son barcos de guerra, y a estas
aves se les dió este nombre por su costumbre de
atacar a otras aves para robarles el alimento.
Incluso llegan al extremo de agarrar a otras aves
por la cola y sacudirlas hasta que vomiten su
alimento. Hay cinco especies distintas a nivel
mundial, y la Magnífica es la que encontramos en
México.
Las Fragatas pueden permanecer en vuelo más
de una semana, pero son incapaces de despegar
de una superficie plana. Necesitan aventarse al
vacio para despegar, por lo que nunca se les
encuentra en el agua. Más bien agarran su presa
desde la superficie sin parar de volar, y
normalmente comen en vuelo.

Los machos tienen una bolsa roja en el cuello
que se infla durante la temporada reproductiva.
Las hembras tienen el pecho blanco, mientras
que los jóvenes tienen la cabeza blanca. La
Fragata Magnífica llega a medir hasta dos metros
entre punta y puntadelasalas. Ponenunsolo
huevo por temporada de anidación, y cuidan a la
cría durante un año; más que cualquier otra ave.

Frigates are war ships, and Frigatebirds (also
known as pirate birds) get their name from their
habit of attacking other birds to steal their food,
even going to the extreme of grabbing smaller
birds by the tail and shaking them until they
regurgitate a meal. There are five species
worldwide, and the Magnificent is the species found
in México.
Frigate birds can remain in flight for over a week at
a time, but cannot take off from a flat surface. To
fly they must plunge off a cliff or limb, and so they
are never found in the water. Instead they snatch
their prey from the ocean surface while in flight,
and usually feed in flight as well.

Males have a red throat sac which inflates during
mating season; females have a white breast, and
juveniles have a white head. Magnificent
Frigatebirds can reach wingspans of over 2 meters.
They lay a single egg per nesting season, and care
for their young for up to a year- longer than any
other bird.
