| La inconfundible cucharona es nocturna, pero frecuentemente se le ve durante el día descansando entre mangles. Además del enorme pico al que debe su nombre, la Cucharona tiene unos ojos grandes que le ayudan a detectar su presa en la oscuridad. Se alimentan de insectos, crustáceos, ranas y peces. Pueden llegar a medir unos 54 cm. Al igual que otras garzas, macho y hembra comparten las responsabilidades de construir el nido, incubar los huevos y cuidar de sus crías. Pero a diferencia de la mayoría de las garzas que tienden a abandonar un nido amenazado, las Cucharonas defienden a sus crias. Otro hábito inusual entre las garzas es su costumbre de cazar solas. Por estas razones, y por su pico tan singular, los ornitólogos debaten si realmente es o no una garza. |

| The instantly recognizable Boatbill is mostly nocturnal, but is often enough seen roosting in mangroves during the day. In addition to the large beak which gives it its name, the Boatbill has large eyes, useful in detecting prey at night. Boatbills feed on insects, crustaceans, frogs and fish. They can reach heights of around 54 cm. As do other herons, male and female Boatbills share the responsibilities of nest building, egg incubation and caring for their young. Unlike other herons which tend to abandon nests when faced with intruders, the Boatbills will defend their young. Also unusual among herons is its habit of feeding alone. For these reasons, and for its un-heronlike beak, there is some debate among ornithologists on whether the Boatbill is truly a heron or not. |
