Garzon Azulado - Great Blue Heron

El Garzón Azulado llega a medir 1.4 metros de
altura y pesa entre 2 y 3 kg. Es un pescador y
cazador experto, que tiende a ser solitario
fuera de la temporada reproductiva. Anida en
árboles y pone varios huevos a la vez. Llega a
vivir entre 15-20 años.

Su largo y afilado pico es utilizado para lanzar
una variedad de presas: peces, caracoles
insectos, víboras, ranas, salamandras,
roedores e incluso aves más pequeñas. Cazan
solos, normalmente al amanecer y atardecer,
pero se reproducen en grandes colonias. A
pesar de la protección del grupo, los
depredadores se aseguran de que tan solo un
tercio de sus crías sobrevivan el primer año.

The Great Blue Heron can measure up to 1.4 m in
height and weighs between 2 and 3 kg. They are
expert fishers and hunters, that tend to be solitary
except during the mating season. They nest in trees,
and lay several eggs at a time. Their lifespan is
between 15-20 years.

Their long sharp beak is used to spear a variety of
prey, including fish, snails, insects, snakes, frogs,
salamanders, rodents and even small birds. They hunt
alone, predominantly around dawn and dusk, and
breed in large colonies. Despite this group protection,
predators ensure that only about a third of hatchlings
survive the first year.
