| Inconfundible por sus ojos rojos y cabeza blanca y negra, ésta es una de las garzas más distinguidas. Tiene una “corona” amarilla que se vuelve más evidente durante la temporada reproductiva. Los jóvenes son de color pardo/gris y carecen de distintivos. Es igual de activa de día que de noche, y llega a medir unos 60 cm. Se alimenta principalmente de crustáceos, pero también de peces, ranas, serpientes, insectos y hasta de pequeños mamíferos. Al igual que la Cucharona, tiende a ser más solitaria que las demás garzas. |

| Unmistakable because of its red eyes and black & white face, this is one of the more attractive herons. The “yellow crown” which gives it its name is more evident during mating season. Juveniles lack any distinctive markings and are grayish/brown all over. This bird is as active at night as it is in the day, and can reach heights of about 60 cm. It feeds primarily on crustaceans, but also on fish, frogs, snakes, insects, and even small mammals. Like the boatbill, it tends to be more solitary than other herons. |
