Strangely, the scientific name of this bird does not refer to its white plumage, but rather means “red nosed pelican”, due to the bulge that forms on its beak during the nesting season. Although not as common as the Brown, it is a beautiful and unmistakable bird. It can live up to 15 years in the wild, and up to 30 in captivity. Unlike the Brown, it does not crash dive to feed. Instead it feeds while swimming in shallow waters, cooperating with other White Pelicans to herd fish by flapping their wings. |
