International Year of the Reef 2008
Recognizing an urgent need to increase awareness and understanding of coral reefs and to further conserve and manage valuable coral reef and associated ecosystems, the International Coral Reef Initiative designated 2008 as the International Year of the Reef (IYOR 2008). Please help us strengthen awareness about the value of coral reefs and associated ecosystems in Mexico by following these recommendations and encouraging others to do the same:
| O | Do not chase, touch, pick up or feed any marine animals. |
| O | Do not step on, touch, or harvest coral. |
| O | Avoid picking up and disturbing pieces of coral and shells. |
| O | Do not stir up the sandy ocean floor. Suspended sand and sediment can suffocate the tiny coral animals. |
| O | Do not drop anchors onto coral reefs. |
| O | Do not buy or sell coral, turtle, shark, conch and shell jewelry. |
| O | Avoid spear fishing. |
| O | Use biodegradable sunblock or better even, wear a T-shirt or rash vest to avoid wearing sunblock. |
| O | Help keep the beach and ocean clean. |
| O | Do not eat prohibited or out-of-season fish or seafood. |
