Slow Food Congress to be held in Mexico
Slow Food is an international
culinary movement started in 1989 in Italy by founder Carlo Petrini. The
movement was created to counteract the age of Fast Food and to promote healthy,
sustainably produced, flavorful food. It has grown to be a movement which
aims to promote traditional foods while protecting the environment. In order to
raise awareness as to the importance of keeping the balance between healthy
eating and the environment, Slow Foods organizes regular regional and
international events. This year, the 5th
International Slow Food Congress will take place from the 8th-11th
November in Puebla, Mexico.
For traditional Mexican Food to survive the modern age of hamburgers and pizzas, it is important to understand the problems that Mexican farmers and small agricultural producers face in competing with large industrial producers. In order to keep Mexico’s culinary traditions alive, favor local producers. If you support local farmers’ markets, your fruit and vegetable have a higher chance of having been grown with minimal pesticide. You will also be contributing less to global warming, as the produce will have travelled only a few miles as opposed to thousands of miles to reach your table.
