| Sabía que había distintos tipos de ardillas, pero cuando me puse a investigar la de esta foto me lleve la sorpresa de que a nivel mundial hay 261 especies! En México podemos encontrar 35 de ellas, de las cuales 8 se encuentran en riesgo, y 13 son endémicas (es decir, solo aquí las tenemos). Las ardillas en general tienen un papel importante en sus ecosistemas. Dispersan gran variedad de semillas (y por lo mismo su presencia puede ser un indicador de la salud del ecosistema), y también son alimento para aves de rapiña, mamíferos carnivoros y serpientes. La que aquí podemos ver es la Yucateca (Sciurus yucatanensis). Se alimenta principalmente de frutos, nueces y semillas, pero también flores, capullos y brotes. Construye su nido de hojas y palos entre ramas de árboles. |
| I knew there were different kinds of squirrels, but when I started researching the one in this photo I was surprised to learn that worldwide there are over 261 species! In Mexico we can find 35 of them, of which 8 are endangered, and 13 are endemic (which means we only have them here). Squirrels in general play an important role in their ecosystems. The spread a wide variety of seeds (and for the same reason their presence can be considered an indicator of ecosystem health), and they are an important food for birds of prey, carnivorous mammals and snakes. The one we see here is the Yucatecan (Sciurus yucatanensis). It feeds primarily on fruits, nuts and seeds, but also flowers, buds and shoots. It builds a nest of leaves and sticks among tree branches. |
