Hay dos especies de cocodrilo en la región, y
es muy dificil distinguirlas.  Aún los
científicos a veces deben examinar los
dientes y ciertos huesos para estar seguros.
Pero en general el Moreleti tiende a ser mas
pequeño y oscuro, mientras que el
Americano tiene los picos de la piel más
pronunciados.  En Chinchorro y Cozumel
puede ver los Americanos.   En el resto de la
región el más abundante es el Moreletti.

Durante el día se les ve asoleándose, pero de
noche cazan y se aparean. Al diferencia de
las tortugas marinas que abandonan sus
nidos, las hembras de cocodrilo cuidan su
nido, y ambos, macho y hembra, cuidan de
sus crías.  Aparte de los humanos, sus
enemigos principales son aquellos animales
que se alimentan de sus huevos y crías,
como son serpientes, algunas aves mayores
y mamíferos como el mapache.  Pocas crías
llegan a la madurez.

Para aliviar la presión sobre poblaciones
silvestres, se han autorizado las granjas de
cocodrilos.
There are two species of crocodile in the region,
and they can be very difficult to tell apart. Even
scientists may have to examine the arrangement
of teeth or certain bones to make sure. But the
Mexican crocodile tends to be shorter and darker,
while the spikes on the American ́s skin tend to be
more pronounced. At Chinchorro and Cozumel you
can find the American, while the Mexican is more
abundant in the rest of the region.

During the day they are often seen sunning
themselves, but they are nocturnal creatures that
hunt, and mate, at night. Unlike sea turtles which
abandon their nest once its laid, female crocodiles
guard their nests and both males and females care
for their young. Other than humans, their main
enemies are animals that feed on their eggs and
young, such as snakes, larger birds and mammals
such as raccoons. Few hatchlings reach adulthood.

To lessen the pressure on wild populations,
commercial crocodile farms have now been
authorized.
