| El singularmente bello caparazón de esta especie se ha utilizado para hacer joyería, peines, cepillos y otros accesorios durante miles de años. Las Careyes tienen una cabeza estrecha con “pico de pájaro” que utilizan para cazar a su presa (esponjas, medusas y demás invertebrados) en el arrecife. Se les encuentra en todos los mares tropicales y subtropicales y anidan en 60 países. A pesar de que su carne puede ser venenosa (según su dieta), en algunos lugares aún se le considera una delicia. Estas son las tortugas marinas más pequeñas del Caribe Méxicano, y llegan a pesar 60 kg con caparazones que miden 90 cm en longitud. Se calcula que llegan a vivir aproximadamente unos 50 años. No son tan fáciles de observar como las Blancas, y más bien tienden a huir de los humanos. Sin embargo, parecen responder a ser ignoradas. Si ve una, puede intentar prolongar su encuentro fingiendo desinterés y evitando nadar hacia ella. |
| The exceptionally beautiful shell of this species has been crafted into jewelry, combs, brushes and other accessories for thousands of years. Hawksbills are named after their narrow, birdlike head and use their sharp beak to pick their prey (largely sponges, jellyfish & other invertebrates) off the reef. They are present in all tropical & subtropical oceans and known to nest in 60 different countries. Despite the fact that their flesh can be poisonous to humans (depending on their diet), they are still considered a delicacy in some parts of the world. These are the smallest sea turtles of the Mexican Caribbean, weighing in around 60 kg with shells that can reach 90 cm in length. Their lifespan is unknown, but estimated at around 50 years. They are usually not as approachable as Greens and tend to flee the scene as soon as they spot humans. However, they do seem to respond positively to being ignored. If you see one, you can try to prolong the encounter by pretending not to notice and avoiding swimming in its direction. |
